It has been producing whisky since 1798, making it older than both Glenlivet and Glenfiddich (the two other major players). The distillery itself was built in 1798, but its history goes back to 1494 when King James IV granted permission to build a brewery on behalf of his brother Alexander Stewart (who later became Earl of Rosslyn).
The current owners are The Edrington Group, who also own Glenmorangie and Macallan whiskies – two other much-loved single malts! They’ve won many awards over the years including World Whisky Awards Best European Single Malt three years running between 2015-2017; Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018; Gold Medal – Spirit Business Magazine Awards 2016/17; Gold Medal – International Wine & Spirits Competition 2014/15 etc…

In 2009 Highland Park was honored with two gold medals at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), one for its 15-year-old expression, which came second overall in its category behind Glenmorangie 18yo Port Wood Finish; and another for their 21-year-old bottling which won Best Non Chill Filtered Blend Category.

One of the best ways to taste Highland Park whisky is by visiting the distillery itself! The Highland Park Distillery is located on the Orkney island of South Ronaldsay, and it’s one of only two distilleries on Orkney. The other, Birniemore (which produces Glenmorangie), has been closed since 1999 but could be reopened in 2020 for tours and tastings.
