Drawing a pug

Step 1:

Starting just above the middle of your paper, draw an irregular circle to outline the shape of the Pug’s head. Emphasize the Pug’s chubby cheeks by making them slightly wider than the rest of the face, as shown in the illustration. Avoid pressing too hard with the pencil when outlining. It’s crucial to draw with a light hand to easily erase contour lines that you won’t need later. Remember to draw with light strokes when drawing a rough sketch or outline.

Step 2:

Pugs are particularly known for their cute little folded ears, so that’s what we’ll be drawing in this step. Draw an uneven shape with a tapered top and wide bottom so that the right ear is fully visible. Then draw a similar shape in half on the opposite side to create the left ear. Remember to erase the overlapping lines inside the ears to polish the shape!

Step 3:

Draw an elongated shape with a round bottom below the head to create the body. Keep in mind that this is just the outline of the body, so be sure to draw with a light grip to avoid hard lines that are hard to erase. As you can see from the illustration, the Pug’s body is relatively smaller than its head. It is because we are drawing a cartoon or an animated pug. You can make the body as big or as small as you want!

Step 4:

Draw two short vertical parallel lines on either side of the Pug’s chest. It forms the two front legs of the Pug. Next, draw a curved line forming a wide “C” at the bottom of each leg to create the feet. Remember to draw two small curved lines inside each foot to create a division between the legs!

Step 5:

Draw an inverted U-shaped curve with the left line longer than the other on the lower back of the Pug’s body. It creates the appearance of a bent hind leg. Next, draw the three-legged foot at the bottom of the hind leg. Since the Pug faces sideways, only its left hind leg is visible. Therefore, we will not draw the opposite leg on the back.

Step 6:

Pugs tend to have short, pointy tails, so that’s what we’ll be drawing in this step. Create the tail by drawing a narrow pointed shape on the back of the Pug’s body. In the illustration above, the tail is raised. However, if you wish, you can also draw it in a spiral shape! Create the muzzle by drawing an oval shape laterally down the center inside the Pug’s face. It is where you will draw the Pug’s nose and mouth later in the following steps.

Step 7:

On the outline of the muzzle, draw two huge circles to create the shape of the Pug’s eyes. Pugs are known for their pair of large bulging eyes. It is one of its numerous distinctive elements!

Now we will draw the rest of the facial features to complete the look. From top to base, remove a curved eyebrow over per eye. Next, draw an oval shape on the side with a slightly pointed underside and a curved W-shaped line inside the muzzle. Remember to add little dots inside the muzzle for more detail!

Step 9:

Like any other character and animal, how you shade the Pug’s eyes determines whether it will look sad or happy. It all depends on the brightness of the eyes. Inside the eye area, draw a circle on each side, depending on which direction you want the Pug to look. In this case, we draw the pupil from the right side. Then draw a smaller circle inside the pupil to create the iris. Next, draw two more small ones.
