The black screen of death is something that every Oculus Quest2 user experiences. The black screen of death is a phenomenon where the screen appears completely black. It is easy to see that Quest 2 has been turned on but that nothing is actually happening. Sometimes the Oculus logo may appear before the black screen, but other times it doesn’t.

Despite how frightening this may sound, it is quite common and can be fixed with various solutions.

What is the Oculus Quest II Black Screen of Death?

The Oculus Quest 2, which is updated frequently, is likely to have many causes for the black screen of death. Low battery is the most common reason. This could be due to the Quest 2 not turning on properly.

How to Fix the Oculus Quest 2 Black Screen of Death

There are many solutions to Oculus Quest 2 won’t turn on problem. You should try them all.

  1. Charge your headset and check the battery
  2. Open the Quest 2 menu using your controller
  3. Do a hard reboot
  4. Download the Oculus app to your smartphone
  5. Charge the headset for 30 minutes and then turn on
  6. The proximity sensor is available.
  7. Factory reset Quest 2 (last option)

1. Make sure you check the battery and charge your headset

The black screen of death can be caused by a completely dead power supply. The Quest 2 will typically inform you by showing an empty battery when you try to turn it off, but this will not happen when the black screen of Death occurs.

Connect your Quest 2 to your charger provided with the headset. There is a known problem that could cause damage to your headset if it is used with a different charger. Try turning the headset on to see if it charges.

2. Open the Quest 2 Menu with Your Controller

A Quest 2 may also display the black screen of doom due to a headset losing its tracking with controllers when it is removed from your head. After you have placed the headset on your head, press the Oculus symbol on the right controller to access the main menu. The problem can be solved by pressing the menu button on your left controller.

3. Do a Reboot

Hard-rebooting your headset is the third best way to get rid of the black screen. This can be done by holding down the power button for at minimum ten seconds. This is an effective way to solve many problems and not just the black screen of death.

If you are unable to hard-reboot, try using the bootloader menu. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Hold the power and volume buttons together for at most ten seconds.
  2. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Boot device.”
  3. To reboot your Quest 2, press the power button

4. Get the Oculus App on Your Phone

Open the Oculus app from your smartphone and ensure that it is connected with your headset. You can run an app from your smartphone if the app is able to see Quest 2. Check your headset after the game launches to make sure the black screen of death has not disappeared.

5. Keep the Headset Charged for 30 minutes while you are Powered On

Sometimes updating the Quest 2 can lead to some strange moments. If your battery is low during an update, these moments can become even more bizarre. This solution is similar to the first, but instead of checking that it is charging, and then turning it on again, you should leave it on the charger at least 30 minutes. If it is an update, you can wait for it to turn on before unplugging it from the charger.

Check your Oculus app to see if your Quest 2 has been updated and if it is connected. You might need to manually update the Quest 2 if the Wi-Fi was damaged during the update.

6. Check out the Proximity Sensor

The proximity sensor is the sensor that sits between the lenses. The proximity sensor switches the screen on and off when you wear the headset. Sometimes it can become smudged and get bugged.

You may have a problem with the proximity sensor if you get a black screen when you turn your controllers.

Third-party VR accessories such as VR Cover’s facial replacement kit, can cause the blackscreen of death by interfering the the proximity sensor. To see if the problem is solved, remove any third-party accessory.

You might need to modify the accessory if it is causing the problem.

If this is not the problem, you can cover the proximity sensor with your thumb and see if it disappears. If not, you can clean the screen with the same microfiber cloth that was used to clean your lenses.

If the black screen disappears when you cover the sensor with your thumb, but not when you place the headset on your head then you need to check for a gap in the headset that would allow light to reach the sensor. This would cause the headset to think you aren’t wearing it.

7. Factory Reset Your Quet 2 (Last Resort).

After you’ve tried everything, you should not attempt to factory restore your Quest 2. You must ensure that you have tried all the options before moving on to the next one. Otherwise, everything in your Quest 2 will be lost.

You will still have all your Oculus purchases, but you will need to download and install the software again. Your Quest’s software will look exactly the same as when you received it from the box. You will need to wait until the updates are available once you connect to Wi-Fi.

Do the following to perform a factory reset:

  1. Hold the power and volume buttons together for at most ten seconds.
  2. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Factory Reset.”
  3. The power button is pressed.

Is Your Black Screen Of Death Still On You?

There is a good chance the problem is hardware related if you have tried all the solutions we suggested. The black screen may persist even after the factory reset. If that happens, you will need to contact Oculus to get your headset repaired or replaced.

You should not attempt to repair hardware by yourself. This will invalidate the warranty and make it unreliable for repairs or replacements.
