A racking system is a type of storage system. It helps in keeping the inventory organised and accessible at the same time. The racking systems make it possible to store more merchandise, increase available space, and reduce inventory loss. They are also known as storage towers or storage shelves.

However, you must consider warehouse logistics before mentioning a proper racking system. This is where a stacker comes in. These machines are used for handling large boxes by picking them up and moving them from one place to another. Stackers come in various types, like electric stackers, to meet the different needs of a warehouse.

Here’s a look at what they are and their application.

What is a Stacker?

A stacker is a material handling equipment that helps pick and stack materials more efficiently. It is a combination of conveyor systems and forklift mechanisms. It can lift, push, and pull things from one container to another. It is best for handling huge containers and pallets with high accuracy.

The stacker can load and unload bulk goods, move products, and pick and place small and large items. The stackers generally use different lifting mechanisms to handle various materials and loads.

Types of Stackers and their Applications

A manual stacker

It consists of a platform that can be raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram. The platform has a lip extending over the pallet’s edge, and the operator stands on the platform to load or unload the pallet. The operator moves the stacker into position using a lever, and the pallet is loaded or unloaded onto the platform. A manual stacker can help you move warehouse equipment up to 1500 kg.

Semi-electric stacker

It consists of a mast with a horizontal platform at the top, to which a pair of forks is attached. The operator stands on the platform and uses a joystick to control the movement of the forks. The main advantage of this stacker is that it requires far less effort to operate, making it much easier to move heavy loads of about 1000-2000 kg.

Electric stacker

It consists of a platform mounted on a set of wheels and a mast attached to the platform. The mast has a set of forks to lift and move the load. A battery powers the electric stacker, and a single person can operate it. An electric stacker is a very versatile piece of equipment with many advantages. It is much more manoeuvrable and can be used in a much wider range of applications. It is also much safer to use than a forklift.

Counter Balance Stacker

It consists of a counterbalance weight, typically located at the rear of the machine, and a stacker’s arm used to move the load. A counterbalance stacker can be used with various load sizes and weights and easily adjust to accommodate different loads.

Additionally, the counterbalance weight helps stabilise the stacker and prevents it from tipping over when used.

Benefits of Stackers

The primary benefit of using stackers is that they can lift and transport heavy items. This makes it easier for warehouse workers to move items from one place to another. This helps in improving the efficiency of the warehouse workers.

Secondly, a stacker can be integrated with material handling equipment such as conveyors, palletisers, and automated storage and retrieval systems—this help improve the warehouse’s overall efficiency.

In addition, a stacker saves time. This is mainly because it can load and unload items faster than other equipment. Also, they help to reduce operational costs. They need a single operator to do so much work. This reduces the number of workers designated to a particular product movement in a warehouse.

Finally, you can use stackers for a wide range of applications. These applications include picking and packing, loading and unloading, and moving items from one location to another.

When it comes to warehouse management, you cannot ignore the importance of stackers. These machines are handy tools for different applications in the warehouse. While material handling requires effective instruments, all you need to do is to select the best stacker for your warehouse specifications.
