Thor Love and Thunder trailer: Chris Hemsworth goes from dad-bod to God-bod, Christian Bale’s menacing villain revealed

Marvel has debuted the first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer following a hit teaser that was unveiled recently. It pits Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder against Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.

With skeletal white skin and a menacing tone, Gorr looks a lot like Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter movies. The trailer teases Thor and Jane’s humorous exchanges, some lavish fantasy world-building, and Bale’s intense performance, with the hit Guns N’ Roses song Sweet Child O’ Mine playing in the background, just like it did in the teaser.

About the Teaser

Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder

Love and Thunder is directed by Taika Waititi, who re-energised the franchise with the critically and commercially successful Thor: Ragnarok. The film reimagined the grave Shakespearean hero as a wise-cracking oaf. Love and Thunder also brings back Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, while Russell Crowe cameos as Zeus. Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper return.

So, who is holding the title of Mighty Thor, and what has Jane been doing for the last eight years, seven months, and six days? We don’t know yet, but we do know that besides the return of the splashy color scheme that director Taika Waititi is carrying over from Thor: Ragnarok, there seems to be a Snyder Cut-ish black-and-white segment in-store as Gorr faces off with the MCU heroes.

Unsurprisingly, however, none of those elements are as consequential as a finger flick from Zeus (Russell Crowe) himself. Expect to see all of the above, and, of course, Taika Waititi as Korg, when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8th, 2022.

The trailer shows Thor embarking on a journey of self-discovery and that, my friend, is his transition from “dad bod to god bod.” But soon, he has to change plans as he has to team up with Jane and not to miss, Zeus, Valkyrie and Korg, to eliminate a galactic killer. And enter Christian Bale as Gorr, who seeks the extinction of gods. He is hell-bent on killing all god because “the only thing gods care about is themselves,” he said in the trailer and added, “So this is my vow: All gods will die.” Scary, right?

In case you missed it, the official teaser blew the minds of Marvel fans as it showed Jane wielding Thor’s magical hammer Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor.

The biggest talking point of the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, however, is that it gives us our first proper look at the menacing antagonist Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). In a chilling sequence, he vows to eliminate the Gods, which sets the stage for an epic confrontation between this galactic killer and Thor’s allies. Going by the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, the third sequel to the 2011 superhero movie Thor promises to be an entertaining and action-packed affair.

Love and Thunder cast is headlined by Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Portman as Foster, Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, and Tessa Thompson as the king of New Asgard Valkyrie. Russell Crowe and Jaimie Alexander appear as the Olympian god Zeus and Thor’s childhood friend Sif, respectively. Taika Waititi, who directs the film off his own screenplay, appears as the Kronan Gladiator Korg. Additionally, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper will reprise their roles from the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Waititi has previously hinted that the Thor: Love and Thunder story will examine “universal themes”. He told Entertainment Weekly: “It’s not a serious film, and it’s not a drama, but we do deal with ideas that I think a lot of humans deal with — universal themes about love and loss and our place in the world. Everyone sort of asks this question in the film: What is your purpose? What is the reason that you’re a hero, and what do you do when you have these powers?”
